Monday 5-5-14
So our
trek back to Berega began at 1:30. Jove was pretty much asleep from the
beginning. Ayla took a little bit of work to get her to fall asleep. She was
just too sad missing daddy to fall right asleep. But a half hour of back
rubbing I finally got her to pass out. I did my best to doze, but it was really
hard. I was constantly aware and trying to keep the kids from kicking each
other, smothering each other, and making sure they weren’t falling off the
bench seat because of the bumps in the road. On top of being late and making
some of the most apparent excuses it turns out that the wiper blades on the car
were broken and Abdala had not kept up to make sure they worked. So of course
it was raining and we had to drive extra slow and stop frequently in order to
hand wipe off the windshield so Abdala could see out the window enough to
drive. We make it to Morogoro at 5:20am. This is so early that we would have
had to wait around for a few hours before any of the dukas would have opened,
so we decided that we could do without the other foods such as hotdogs,
chicken, and the other refrigerated items. We will just have to get them
another time. We continue our drive the rest of the way to Berega. We came upon
the river and Abdala checked it out to see if we could drive across. Thankfully
even with the rain, it was low enough to drive across. We had lots of bags of
groceries, some souvenir items, not to mention the kids that were still
basically asleep. It would have been a horrible time to have to cross on foot.
So we drive across and then stop to pick up a few of the chekechea kids. We
drive them over to the school so they can get there on time. Then on homeward
to unpack and clean a little.
Finally
around 9:30 I got the kids fully set up with a movie and breakfast and decide
it is time for me to finally try to get some sleep. The children decided this
wasn’t good for them and they woke me up every ten minutes for one issue or
another. After a while they asked if they could go outside to play. I wanted to
sleep so I told them go ahead, just to stay in the back yard and try to not get
too muddy. About 15 minutes later I heard a screech so I jump up wearing
nothing but one of Asa’s shirts and a pair of undies. The shirt was long enough
but still, going to the front door to see what happened and having a bunch of
village kids, I felt a little awkward. Turns out Jove just fell on the rocks,
but was fine. What else do I see but both my kids, in the front instead of the
back yard and they are both covered in mud, making mud balls to throw at each
other and mud nests. As one might expect, I am not pleased by this, so I guess
my sleep time was over and I got them into the shower. The rest of the day was
a very mellow day; Drinking coffee and chai, trying to wake up, feeding the
children when they needed food, and in general just trying not to go crazy from
lack of sleep. It is an early bedtime because we have school bright and early
in the morning. But some time will be spent on Facebook and the blog trying to
update everyone so no one worries. Now it is just to wait to hear from Asa that
he made it back safely.
