Monday 6-16-14

Monday 6-16-14
We woke up and began getting ready. They kids were being good so I put on Charlotte’s Web for them (a movie they choose). While they watched their movie, I cleaned the kitchen, attempted at getting the water filter to stop leaking, washed my chupi because I had gotten to the point where I put on my last pair of underwear. It was either wash it or go without. Even through doing all of this, I still managed to enjoy my cup of coffee.
Bibi Hasani came, as promised. I love saying hello to her. I often get things wrong because of just waking up, but when I do, she laughs at me in a kind way then tells me what I was trying to say.
We went off to school. I had to go back into the house two different times; the first because I forgot my bag of school stuff, the second because I forgot to grab something to eat so that I could take my anti malarial. When we got to school, I went to check the homework I had given out, which means Grace. Of course she was not there. I have a meeting with her and Doudi’s parents or grandparents, also Robert and his parents or grandparents. The three of them have been missing too much school and are on the verge of getting kicked out. It was just an example today that the two of them were not here. Robert was here, but he was kicked out of class in the afternoon for nonstop playing with his books, so he might as well have not been there. I get to tell the caregivers that if they miss any more school for nonsense reasons, they are out. I shall see what excuse the two give for missing today. They may be kicked out before the meeting even happens. During class time with std1 all went well. We did lots of English today. I lost track of time I guess and so we only got to do a small math quiz. I could have been a little bit longer by maybe five minutes, but I wanted to read them fox in socks since I read it to the other two classes last week. We still ran short on time, so I only read them the second half of the book. A few laughed and enjoyed it, but I think too many didn’t have enough English to actually appreciate it.
In std3 we did our book reports like I have had them do every Monday since Mamaliz has left. So they got their journals and wrote a report about the book the just returned to me. Elizabeth has had hers for two weeks now. She forgot it at home (she boards here and doesn’t actually live in Berega) and so it was going to be a week before she could get it back to me. But that extra week was today and she is now claiming her father will bring it all the way to Berega and she will give it to me tomorrow. We shall see. I had her do her report on why she didn’t have her book. So she wrote a report about what she did this weekend and at the end wrote that she enjoyed the book so much that was why she forgot it. She is such a sweet girl. At one point Samweli Stan sat back lunging style, reading his book and fanning himself with a notebook, said “Look teacher, I’m a boss.” It was too funny. That kid can be stressful sometimes but he sure does know how to make one laugh.
After class I gave my kiddos a kiss and went on home for lunch. I reheated some of the leftover sweet and sour rice with eggplant and even had a fried drumstick left. The chicken wasn’t as good as the first day, but it was still okay. Before I started eating I gave my mom a quick call. Logan helped me to make sure the call would go through. I didn’t know how to make the plus symbol in front of the phone number. I wanted to say hi and let her know we are okay since there is no internet. My wonderful husband had called her the day before to let her know. When I went to leave back to school I stopped in the office to talk to Ruth about the printer and the internet. She laughed when I brought up the printer, like her and the rest in the office had a good laugh knowing I would come asking about it. She said she would go into Morogoro on Wednesday to get the ink. I just wish she would have trusted me that it didn’t work and I could have gotten it on Saturday, but whatever. When I asked about the internet, she said that Simba net said they would call her back later to let her know when they would come to replace the satellite dish. Later it turns out that they called her and told her they would have to check the schedule to see when they could come. Go figure.
Std2 went well, class as usual. Both of the kids that had homework for me claimed they forgot their notebooks at school on Friday, so now they have the original sentences and another 100 for not doing their homework. I also gave out 100 to each of two students in std3 that were running to get to the bathroom and ignored me when I told them to come back and walk. They claim they didn’t hear me. Logan was feeling sick and Ayla was feeling tired, so he took Ayla and Jove up to the house since it was a little pointless for both the kids to be there. Ayla’s class is something I don’t care if she is there for (I only care if she is there for English and math) and Jove had finished his day of school and just had to wait for me to finish. So it worked out well. A few students asked about Mikumi, so I told them about how the truck broke down and we never made it. They said how they saw Samweli Stan in the truck with us and they wanted to know when I would take all of them to Mikumi. I felt so bad. I told them that Logan invited him. That I would love to take all of them to Mikumi, but I just could not. Other that all of that, it was a very basic day in std2.
We finished school and I headed home to check on the kids and Logan. On the way home I walked with Farida. She brought up the beer I had yesterday. Asking if I had drank the whole thing and all kinds of questions. She still thinks it is just too funny. I suppose if I feel the desire to have a beer I will have to make sure she is not around. When I got to the house, I saw they had a movie on and were just playing. Ayla decided she wanted to stay at the house with Joan while I went up to the market. Jove wanted to come with me so he changed out of his uniform and was ready to go. While I was buying some bananas, we say Grayson. Jove was so excited to see him. He started to sing him the counting to ten in Swahili song and Grayson was happy to see that Jove still remembered from the drive a few weeks back. We went through the market and got the things I needed, and when I got home and unpacked everything, I realized I was given one extra eggplant, four extra limes, and one extra orange. I did buy large numbers of them, so I guess I made them happy.
I made a veggie soup for dinner. The kids loved it and even asked for seconds. I had Logan eat some also so that I wouldn’t have any leftovers since the fridge is working even worse than normal. I have been able to keep the fridge cold by freezing bottles of water since the freezer works fine, and then I just always have those in the fridge. It seemed to be working, but now the freezer doesn’t want to freeze the bottles, so I will have to turn it off for a few days and let the pipes in the back of the fridge defrost. While I cooked dinner, Farida, Joan, and Samweli were inside playing with Ayla and Jove. It was so much noise. I kind of miss when Mamaliz was here and all the kids were afraid to come in. She will definitely have to reestablish the ground rules.
After dinner I got the kids set up with their baths. They both wanted separate stories so I told them that tonight I would do both, but after tonight they would have to take turns picking. So I read them a chapter out of Ramona the Brave and Jove’s choice was Color Kittens. At the end of the second story, Ayla lets out this fart in the tub and starts cracking up because she saw the bubbles floating up. So to follow that up, Jove decides to pee in the tub. He was laying back in the tote a little and began peeing. It went up and landed on his belly. I told him how disgusting he was and never to do that because now he was bathing in pee water. And how horrible it was for him because he is usually getting the water on his mouth and now it is pee on his mouth. At that he began to spit and hopefully it sank in and he will not do that again.
Now the kids are in bed and finally quiet and I will reheat the soup and have a nice hot bowl of veggie potato soup. Even here I find that I enjoy eating more when the kids have gone to bed. It is just so much more relaxing.

Avocados, sleep party, fort, pillow fight: Just a few things Jove said he couldn't wait to have when he gets back home.
